10 unbelievable facts

The Labour Government has cut the Winter Fuel Allowance for thousands of pensioners across Lambeth & Southwark. This means that for the first time in decades elderly people will not receive help this winter to heat their homes. Here are ten UNBELIEVABLE facts about the Winter Fuel Allowance in Lambeth & Southwark which will shock you, and how you can help thousands of pensioners in YOUR area.

1. Over 38,000 Pensioners Could Lose Up to £300 Each
In Lambeth and Southwark, a staggering 38,067 pensioners could lose up to £300 in Winter Fuel Payments this year thanks to Labour’s new policy changes. That’s real money for essentials like heating and hot meals.

2. Winter Fuel Payments Were Created by Labour – Now Labour Are Taking Them Away!
Labour first introduced Winter Fuel Payments under Gordon Brown. But today’s Labour Government is reversing its own policy, leaving thousands of elderly residents out in the cold.

3. Basildon Labour is Stepping Up – Why Can’t Lambeth and Southwark?
While pensioners in Lambeth and Southwark face this cut, other Labour councils, like Basildon, have launched local support programmes such as the Warm Home Guarantee. So why aren’t Lambeth and Southwark doing the same?

4. Lambeth Has the Budget to Help – But Chooses Not To!
From April to June, Lambeth Council spent over £11.4 million on agency staff alone. That’s enough to cover nearly twice the cost of replacing the Winter Fuel Allowance for all Lambeth pensioners! Instead, they’re leaving our elderly residents to fend for themselves.

5. Southwark’s Spending on Refreshments Alone Could Heat 35 Homes
In June, Southwark Council spent nearly £4 million on agency staff in a single month – and even spent thousands on refreshments for meetings. This amount could have kept dozens of pensioners warm through the winter.

6. The Cost of a Local Winter Fuel Allowance is Peanuts Compared to Council Spending
Replacing the Winter Fuel Allowance for every pensioner in Lambeth would cost £5,769,600 annually, and in Southwark £5,650,500. Given their spending habits, both councils could easily afford this – if they made our elderly a priority.

7. Thousands of Vulnerable People Are at Risk
This winter, vulnerable pensioners in Lambeth and Southwark may be forced to choose between warmth and food. This isn’t just about numbers – it’s about people’s lives and dignity.

8. We’re Taking Action – Are You With Us?
The Lambeth and Southwark Conservatives are calling on Labour-led councils to create local winter fuel support schemes. Our elderly residents deserve better. Join us by signing our petition!

9. Local Voices Are Speaking Up
More and more residents are standing up against this neglect, calling on their councils to show compassion. If Basildon can do it, Lambeth and Southwark can too.

10. There’s Still Time to Protect Our Pensioners
Winter is coming fast, but there’s still time for Lambeth and Southwark Councils to make a difference. Will they prioritise our pensioners – or continue spending on consultants and refreshments?
